Characteristic
Be white powder, Sodium Metabisulfite is able to dissolve in water with solubility 54g/100ml. And its melting point is more than 170°C (begins at 150°C). In water, Sodium Metabisulfite releases sulfur dioxide (SO2), a pungent, unpleasant smelling gas that can cause breathing difficulties to people. Released sulfur dioxide however makes the water a strong reducing agent.
Application
Food additive:
It is widely used as food additive, mainly as a preservative and sometimes is identified as E223. The acceptable daily intake is up to 0.7 mg per kg of body weight. It has no side effects; it is oxidised in the liver to harmless sulfate and excreted in the urine. So, it is well-knowen as antioxygen antistaling agent in fishery.
It is commonly used in homebrewing and winemaking to sanitized equipment.
It is used as a cleaning agent for potable water reverse osmosis membranes in desalination systems. It is also used to remove chloramine from drinking water after treatment.
Water treatment:
Concentrated sodium metabisulfite can be used to remove tree stumps.
Medicine Raw:
It can be used as the raw material of chloroform and benzaldehyde.
Textile:
Sodium metabisulfite also can be used as dechlorinating agent and scouring agent of bleaching textile.
